Sri Lanka’s Colombo port has been nominated as fastest-growing port

Colombo Port has achieved a notable position among the world’s leading ports. K. D. S. Ruwanchandra, Secretary to the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Aviation, revealed that Colombo Port has been recognized by Alpha liner, an information platform designed to serve the needs of the liner shipping industry, as the world’s fastest-growing port in the first quarter of 2024. The port recorded an extraordinary growth rate of 23.6% during this period.

Speaking at the Presidential Media Centre, Ruwanchandra highlighted the economic benefits of this growth, noting that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) earned 50 million US dollars during the cited period. This significant revenue boost underscores the port’s critical role in Sri Lanka’s economy and its growing influence on the global shipping stage. The surge in port activity has led to job creation and economic opportunities, further fueling the country’s development. The increased volume of goods passing through the port reflects its growing importance as a key player in global supply chains.

Moreover, Colombo Port also stands among the Top 50 World Container Ports, as ranked by the World Shipping Council. Handling approximately 7 million TEUs in 2021, Colombo Port continues to make impressive strides in the maritime industry. This list is topped by China’s Shanghai port with a volume of 47.03 million TEUs.

Strategically positioned along major shipping routes connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa, Colombo Port has become a pivotal transshipment hub. The port’s growth is driven by significant investments in infrastructure and technology, including deep-water harbors that can accommodate larger vessels and state-of-the-art cargo handling systems that have streamlined operations to increase efficiency. With the introduction of advanced automation and digital technologies, there has been a significant improvement in cargo processing times and a reduction in delays. These technological advancements not only enhance operational efficiency but also strengthen the port’s competitive edge in the global market.
