From a Remote Village to the Heart of Colombo: Irshad’s Journey of Perseverance and Community Impact

Irshad arrived in Nawala, Rajagiriya, in 2001 at just 18 years old, stepping into a new life as an assistant to his shopkeeper uncle. The shop was small but well-established, located next to the landmark mosque on the top of Nawala Road. This was a time long before the highways, supermarkets, and shopping complexes that define Rajagiriya today—a quieter era where local businesses were the heart of the community.

From the start, Irshad showed a natural talent for business. His work ethic was unmatched, often working long hours without complaint. It didn’t take long before he was running the shop in his own right, taking on more responsibilities as his uncle entrusted him with the day-to-day operations. An old boy of Malwana National School, Irshad quickly adapted to his new surroundings, driven by a determination to succeed.

Fascinatingly, just 13 years after arriving in Rajagiriya, Irshad’s business acumen grew so strong that in 2014, he opened his own shop right next to his uncle’s. His rise was swift, but it was built on a foundation of hard work, honesty, and an unshakable commitment to his customers. Over the past 24 years, his small shop has become a cherished stop for many who live and work in the area, known to most as “Farm Shop.”

What makes Irshad’s success remarkable is not just his business sense but his unwavering perseverance, especially in the face of challenges. Whether it was dealing with the increasing competition brought by the arrival of supermarkets and shopping complexes or managing the responsibilities of taking care of his entire family back home, Irshad’s resolve never faltered. He’s become known for his attention to detail and a deep sense of responsibility, traits that have earned him the loyalty of his customers.

Irshad has become a pillar of the Rajagiriya community and an everyday hero to those around him. He’s more than a shopkeeper—he’s a friend, a confidant, and an inspiration. His story is one of grit, passion, and perseverance, showing that success is not measured by wealth alone, but by the impact you have on the people around you.

Today, after 24 years, Irshad continues to inspire everyone around him with his humility and hard work. If you ever find yourself on top of Nawala Road, near the mosque, stop by his shop. Say hello, and you’ll experience firsthand the warmth of a man who has not only built a successful business but also earned the respect and admiration of an entire community, all while supporting his family across the miles.
