The word “disability” in itself is ironic, especially when those classified as “disabled” or “differently-abled” defy the odds and achieve the unthinkable. Ishan Jalill is one such inspirational human being. Born blind, Ishan has never let his condition get in the way of achieving his dreams.
It all started when he was at school, and one of his most significant achievements is becoming the world’s first-ever born blind oarsman in 2007. Since then, Ishan has been recognized by numerous local and international organizations for his tireless efforts to bring inclusivity to all those with physical disabilities. These organizations include Women in Management, the International Finance Corporation, the US Department of State, the International Republican Institute, the International Foundation for Electoral Systems, Leonard Cheshire Disability UK, Standard Chartered Bank, and the Sri Lanka Youth Parliament.
Ishan has a unique perspective on life and an unwavering commitment to inclusivity, having dedicated his life to advocating for the rights of youth and women with disabilities. Alongside him is his wife, Shavini Somawardhana Jalill, a skilled engineer with a proven track record in conceptualizing and delivering innovative projects across government, NGO, and entrepreneurial sectors.
Together, this dynamic duo is about to embark on a brand-new project. Buckle up for a revolution in corporate events! IDEIA.lk, Sri Lanka’s first dedicated inclusive events management company, is set to launch soon. With a shared mission of creating inclusive events where everyone feels valued and respected, IDEIA.lk offers a range of services including accessibility audits, inclusive event planning, and disability inclusion training. By seamlessly integrating accessibility into every aspect of event planning, from venue selection to guest experience, IDEIA.lk ensures that every attendee feels safe, secure, and dignified.
Often, those with physical disabilities are unable to attend corporate or social events or even face difficulties accessing hotels or restaurants in Sri Lanka. Ishan and Shavini aim to educate establishments, corporates, and brands on the importance of inclusivity. After all, disability should not mean dis-ability.
